Jordan will receive bids for its first operational wind energy plant by
the end of August, local daily The Jordan Times reported today. Companies
from Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy, Denmark, Russia and the UAE are expected to
submit bids for the 40 megawatt plant, which is to be built in Kamsheh near
Jerash, said Ziad Jibril, head of Energy Ministry's Renewable Energy
Directorate. This is the first in a series of steps the energy-thirst kingdom
projected to speed up utilization of wind power. Previously, the only wind
energy projects in the kingdom were two pilot wind farms operated by the Central
Electric Power Generation Company in northern Jordan's Ibrahimiya and Hofa,
according to the official. The National Energy Strategy said Jordan should be
able to generate 600 megawatts of wind and 600 megawatts of solar energy by
2020, accounting for 10 percent of the country's energy
consumption.
