Tokyo stocks dived today. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost
238.69 points, or 1.83 percent, from Friday to 12,834.18. The broader Topix
index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 24.07
points, or 1.92 percent, to 1, 230.64. On the First Section, declining issues
outnumbered advancing ones 1,485 to 194, with 41 others remaining
unchanged. Trading volume on the main section came to 1,342.13 million
shares, down from Friday's 1,779.25 million. Value leader Mizuho Financial
Group plunged 9,000 yen, or nearly 2 percent, to 461,000 yen. Volume leader
GS Yuasa, a manufacturer of batteries, climbed 18 yen, or over 3 percent, to 580
yen. The TSE's Second Section index was down 9.04 points, or 0.35 percent, to
2,555.02 on a volume of 27.97 million shares. On the Osaka Securities
Exchange, the near-term September Nikkei 225 index futures contract was down 220
points to 12,840.
