South Korea's retail sales reached 20.78 trillion won (US$17.95 billion)
in July, up 12.3 percent from a year earlier, the report by the National
Statistical Office (NSO) showed today. In July, the sales grew 6.8 percent to
18.5 trillion won (US$15.98 billion), according to NSO. The report attributed
the sales growth to higher spending on car fuel, medicine and other daily goods
amid sky-high oil prices and runaway inflation. Sales of car fuel jumped 28
percent from a year earlier, the while that of medicine grew 14.3 percent, the
report showed. Other non-durable goods such as cosmetics and soaps surged 16.3
percent, the report added.
