Philippine president appeals for ASEAN meeting on economic slowdown

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today appealed for a special
meeting among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on how to cushion
the impact of the global economic slowdown. President Arroyo proposed the
ASEAN Plus Three to convene on the sidelights of the 7th Asia-Europe Meeting
(ASEM) in Beijing, China on Oct. 24 to 25 to tackle the effect of the current
financial credit crunch in the United States and map out contingencies, the
Philippine News Agency reported. The ASEAN Plus Three was formed by leaders
of the ASEAN and its counterparts from East Asia, namely China, Japan and the
Republic of Korea, with an aim to further strengthen and deepen East Asian
cooperation at various levels and in various areas, particularly in economic and
social, political and other fields.
