London stock market recovers slightly in early trading

The London stock market recovered slightly today in early trading after a
difficult two days when the benchmark FTSE 100 index lost more than 500
points.
The FTSE 100 index was up 146.48 points, or 3.79 percent, to 4,007.87
by 08:40 BST.
Financial and commodity-related firms led the list of risers.
Investment managers Old Mutual and Alliance Trust were up 12 percent and 8.6
percent respectively.
Silver and gold firm Fresnillo was 10 percent higher
and oil and gas explorer Cairn Energy was up 8.3 percent.
