Chavez says to expropriate banks if financial crisis hits Venezuela
3/11/2008 16:16
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said yesterday he would expropriate the
country's banks if the current financial crisis hits his country. "If
something similar comes to pass in Venezuela, you should not have the slightest
doubt that I won't give a penny to the banks -- I'll expropriate them," said
Chavez in the southeastern state of Barinas. The Venezuelan leader said it
was difficult for him to understand the rich countries spending billions of
dollars to bail out banks while dodging their responsibilities in fighting
poverty with the excuse of lack of money. So far, the global financial crisis
has not affected Venezuela's economy, Chavez said.
