Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher today, extending their gains into a
three-day winning streak. The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained
264.37 points, or 3.15 percent, from yesterday to 8,660.24. The broader Topix
index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 16.61
points, or 2.03 percent, to 834. 55. Gainers were led by sea transport,
nonferrous metal and transport equipment issues such as auto shares. Major
decliners included forestry and fishery, insurance, and gas and electric
issues. The market was lifted by US media reports in the afternoon that the
White House and the Congress have agreed to provide a US$15-billion bailout plan
for the big three automakers.
