Tokyo stocks close sharply higher today with the key Nikkei index jumping
5.21 percent higher on hopes that the US government will bail out the embattled
Big Three US automakers. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average climbed 428.79
points to 8,664. 66. The Topix index gained 33.56 points, or 4.13 percent, to
846.93. Value leader Toyota Motor was up 270 yen, or nearly 10 percent, to
3,030 yen while volume leader Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group rose 33 yen, or
nearly 7 percent, to 517 yen. Trading volume on the main section went down to
1,866.44 million shares from 3,028.81 million Friday. On the First Section,
advancing issues outnumbered declining ones 1,538 to 131, with 45 others
remaining unchanged. The TSE's Second Section index advanced 16.42 points, or
0.85 percent, to 1,939.65 on a volume of 35.55 million shares. On the Osaka
Securities Exchange, the near-term March Nikkei 225 index futures contract
gained 340 points to 8,630.
