Vietnamese workers to get unemployment benefits

The Vietnam's contracted laborers will receive unemployment insurance as
of Jan. 1, 2009, the local newspaper Youth reported today, citing the source
with the government decree. According to the decree, Vietnamese laborers who
signed contracts of at least one year with foreign, government and individual
companies will be eligible for unemployment insurance, accounting for 60 percent
of the average salary of the employee before the last six months before being
unemployed, said the decree. Employees receiving unemployment insurance must
have paid unemployment insurance premiums for at least 12 months within 24
months of being unemployed, have registered with local relevant authorities
their unemployment status and have failed to get a new job within 15 days of
registering their unemployment status, said the decree. The local unemployed
laborers will be received compensation and support for vocational guidance and
training and medical insurance during the period of unemployment, it
added.
