Brazil's retail sales fell 0.3 percent in October for the first time in
eight months, seeing as the first toll of the global financial crisis, showed a
monthly report released yesterday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and
Statistics (IBGE). Despite the month-on-month sales fall, October retail
sales jumped 10.1 percent when compared with October of 2007, the IBGE
said. The accumulated retail sales in the first 10 months of 2008 were up
10.4 percent compared with the same period last year. In November 2007 to
October 2008 period, retail sales were up 10.3 percent compared with the
previous 12-month period, the IBGE said. In October, only three of the 10
sectors had a month-on-month increase in sales: publications increased by 2.6
percent; computer, communication and office supplies up 1.4 percent; and
personal and domestic items up 0.3 percent, according to the IBGE. Seven
sectors surveyed for the month-on-month data fell, led by a 19.9- percent plunge
in sales of the car industry, which registered the most significant fall, a
4.4-percent decline in clothing and shoes and a 1.9-percent decrease in fuels
and construction supplies, the IBGE said.
