More than 400 senior high school graduates from Shanghai and Jiangsu and
Zhejiang provinces gathered in Xujiahui area this weekend, competing for a
limited number of entrance spots at the Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology. Most candidates came with their parents; some even arrived
straight from the railway station carrying their luggage. "Compared with
local schools, universities in Hong Kong offer many more opportunities for
internship, exchange and other activities," said a college hopeful identified as
Chen. "But the most important thing is that it's much easier to get a good job
in a multinational corporation or go abroad for further study after
graduation." The university plans to recruit 150 students throughout the
mainland this year, but the admission's office has already received more than
2,600 applications so far. Facing such a large number of candidates, two
teams of professors were sent by the university to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou
and Chengdu to interview candidates who scored well on their college entrance
examinations. "As far as I can see, the quality of candidates this year is
much higher than before," said Thomas Wong, director of the university's China
Program Development. The Hong Kong school's tuition fee for a mainland
student is 60,000 Hong Kong dollars (US$7,700) a year, about 12 times the level
at Fudan University, one of the city's top colleges.
