Matsushita Electric (China) Co Ltd, an electric and electronic consumer
product maker, revealed plans to invest 100 billion yen (US$890 million) in 10
semiconductor plants on China's mainland at a press conference held to unveil
its latest high-end VIERA plasma TV in the Chinese market. The first of the
10 new plants opened in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, on Thursday. The other nine
facilities will be completed within the next two to three years in the same
area, which may establish the whole complex as the largest semiconductor
production base in the world as they will all be linked. According to a
recent survey by several market research firms, the market share of flat TVs
including LCD TVs and plasma TVs in China will rise from 6 percent to 11 percent
by the end of 2005. Matsushita, which makes the Panasonic brand, expects
sales of its VIERA plasma TVs to make up 5 percent of its total sales in China
initially by the end of the year. Its sales of plasma TVs in Japan last year
accounted for 15 percent of its total sales. In April, it established a
plasma TV factory in Shanghai, whose output is expected to top 250,000 to
300,000 units annually.
