Snacks fail tests, pulled off of shelves

Shanghai Daily news

A major producer of snack foods in the city is recalling several of its products after local quality authorities found high levels of aluminum in its foods.
Aluminum levels in four snack products produced by Shanghai Hwa Yuan Foods Co, including prawn and seafood flavored chips, were found to be up to four times acceptable levels, according to the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.
One brand was also found to contain high levels of bacteria.
The tests were conducted by the bureau's branch in Songjiang District, where the company is located, after Hwa Yuan's products failed a similar quality test in Nantong, Jiangsu Province earlier this month.
The bureau has sealed up the company's warehouse and all of the unsold snack foods inside.
Several big supermarkets said they have removed the questionable products from their shelves.
Spokesmen for both Lianhua Supermarket and Hualian Supermarket said they stopped selling the crispy snack foods on Thursday.
Lianhua's spokesman said the supermarket will send all snacks from Hwa Yuan, including several products that have never been linked to aluminum or bacteria, for quality inspections at its own quality test centers and then decide if it will continue to sell any of the company's foods.
Lianhua officials said consumers can get a refund at the stores where they bought Hwa Yuan products, or go to the Hongmei Commercial Building at 8075 Humin Road.
