8/8/2005 11:35

After slamming into Zhejiang Province at the start of the weekend, Typhoon Matsa has been downgraded to a tropical storm and was dumping moderate to heavy rain in Anhui Province last night, where it killed two people.
Anhui emergency management officials said the storm damaged 50,000 hectares of farmland and caused 373 million yuan (US$45 million) in economic losses.
The high winds and heavy rain also destroyed dikes in Chuzhou City, said flood control officials who were overseeing the repair work.
Some 8,600 people were evacuated.
Last night, the storm was moving northwest at 15 kilometers an hour and was battering Chuzhou, Bengbu and Suzhou and areas north of the Huaihe River.
Qingdao, a coastal city in eastern China's Shandong Province was slashed by heavy rain and high wind yesterday afternoon, and meteorologists said stormy weather will last into today.
The city closed its seaside resorts, halted boating services and called in 30,000 fishing vessels.
Beijing, still further north, also was expecting heavy rain through today.
Typhoon Matsa landed in east China's Zhejiang Province during the early morning hours on Saturday. Two people were killed and at least two remain missing, the provincial government said yesterday.
The storm toppled 13,108 houses and caused 6.5 billion yuan in damage in Zhejiang, the provincial flood control headquarters said yesterday afternoon.
It destroyed 205,000 hectares of farmland and is expected to reduce grain output by at least 241,000 tons.
The storm damaged 63,500 businesses, wrecked roads and destroyed power and communication facilities in the province.
In addition, it destroyed 21 reservoirs and 221 kilometers of embankments and damaged a large number of other water resource facilities.
