Chinese funding for school

Beijing City International School, the capital's first Chinese-financed
international school, opened yesterday and has enrolled more than 100 students
from 21 countries and regions. The school is funded by a 460 million yuan
(US$56.8 million) investment by real estate businessman Ni Haohua, president of
the Landgent Group, a real estate enterprise in eastern China's Zhejiang
Province. It is located in Chaoyang District where many foreigners live and
many embassies are located. The school fees were not immediately known, nor
was it known how many grades were included. Beijing now has 13 international
schools, including BCIS, all of its predecessors financed by
foreigners. Principal Christopher Edmunds said the school is unique in
drawing upon the best of both West and East. Chinese language and cultural
studies are emphasized at the facility. Edmunds said children receive a
genuinely international education and a better understanding of and respect for
other civilizations.
