Emergency management departments in Zhejiang Province last night were
preparing for the arrival of Typhoon Nabi - only days after another storm killed
more than 70 people and caused billions of yuan worth of property damage in
several eastern provinces. Heavy rain and wind gusts above 100 kilometers an
hour were expected from today through Wednesday along Zhejiang's central and
northern coastal areas. Shanghai forecasters said Nabi will bring the city
cloudy, cooler weather during the early part of the week. Showers were
predicted for tomorrow along with wind gusts in coastal areas that could top 60
kilometers an hour. Today's high should be 29 degrees Celsius and the low
around 23, the city's weather bureau said. Tomorrow's temperatures should
range between 24 and 30 degrees. And for the rest of the week, highs will be
around 32 and lows 26, forecasters said. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to
brighten up with sunny skies and a few clouds. Meanwhile yesterday,
authorities in areas stricken by Typhoon Talim late last week and over the
weekend were counting casualties and assessing property damage. Torrential
rains and landslides caused by the typhoon killed at least 53 people in east
China's Anhui Province over the past four days, a provincial official said
yesterday. Heavy flows of mud and rocks destroyed nearly 80,000 homes and
damaged more than 130,000 hectares of crops, according to the official with the
Anhui Provincial Disaster Relief Office. Some 168,100 people were evacuated from
the storm's path. Typhoon Talim pounded east China's Fujian Province last
Thursday afternoon with winds above 120 kph, forcing the evacuation of 479,000
people and the closing of schools, roads and airports. In neighboring
Zhejiang, at least 14 people were killed by the storm. Nearly 12,000 houses
were knocked down, and economic losses were estimated at 3.42 billion yuan. In
Jiangxi Province, rain, flooding, landslides and the breach of a river
embankment caused by Talim claimed five lives and left eight people
missing. More than 7,000 houses and 210,000 hectares of crops were destroyed.
Economic losses were estimated at 1.7 billion yuan. Heavy rain also caused
the breach of an embankment on Jiangxi's Liaohe River yesterday afternoon,
leaving two people missing.
