Huaxi earns best village tag

The nation's top 10 villages were selected yesterday at a national forum on
rural community building in Dazhai Village, Shanxi Province. Topping the list
was Huaxi Village in Jiangsu Province. Dazhai Village was ranked No. 2. It was a
model village in the 1950s and has been rejuvenated recently with industrial
development. Also among the top 10 was Xiaogang Village, Anhui Province. It
was considered the forerunner in rural reform. Huayuan Village in Zhejiang
Province boosted its economy through science and technology, while Jinshun
Village in Jiangxi Province grabbed a spot on the list due to its tourist
programs. The others are: Hancunhe Village in suburban Beijing, Nanjie
Village in Henan Province, Jiuxinghe Village in suburban Shanghai, Fubao Village
in Yunnan Province, and Tengtou Village in Zhejiang Province. The villages
were selected for their success in achieving economic development, according to
the organizing committee of the Fifth National Forum on Rural Communities
Construction. Ten outstanding village heads were also named at the forum for
their contributions to regional economic development. Villages led by the 10
outstanding leaders all boasted economic booms. There are 680,000 villages
run by 5 million officials on the Chinese mainland. The three-day national
forum on rural communities construction promotes exchange and cooperation,
according to the organizing committee. The participants will also discuss how
to build industrialized villages with distinct characteristics and how rich
villages can help poor ones to reduce poverty.
