A businessman from the city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province has donated a
massive manta to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The fish, which
is 4.3 meters in width and 2 meters long, will be the biggest manta specimen in
the city, when it goes on display. It weighs about 1 ton. The manta, or
devilfish, was caught at 2pm, last Tuesday by fishermen from Zhoushan, Zhejiang
Province, according to Zhang Kuiding, the man who donated the fish. "They
were about to cook the fish when I saw it," he said, " I think it's a pity to
just cook the fish, so I bought it and donated it to the Shanghai Science and
Technology Museum." Zhang nianshi, director of the museum's collection
department said deep-sea fish like mantas are rarely caught at this time of the
year. He suggested waves caused by Typhoon Talim might have swept the manta into
a fishing net. Mantas are generally about 40 centimeters wide at birth, so
experts believe the specimen is 5 to 6 years old. The museum expects it will
cost tens of thousands of yuan to preserve the fish and make it ready for
display. "However, the fish will be significant to the research of fish
taxonomy and ecology," said museum official Zhang. He estimates it will go on
display by the end of this year. Currently, the largest manta on display in the
city is 3.9 meters wide.
