The foundation was laid in Fengxian District yesterday for a pleasure boat
city - complete with a yacht club, a wharf and hotels - that should be completed
by 2010, district officials announced. According to the blueprint, the
pleasure boat city will be located at Jinhui Port along the Huangpu River, and
cover 11 square kilometers. The first phase of the project, which will include a
central island, a wharf with 2,000 berths and a yacht club, is expected to cover
6 square kilometers and cost 4.7 billion yuan (US$580 million) to build, said Xu
Jianjun, a spokesman for the district government. The project developer will
first broaden the watercourse and build a marsh by next August to provide a good
environment for the pleasure boat city. "By 2010, the pleasure boat city will
allow private boats to run in the river, and be able to hold boat races and
international pleasure boat exhibitions," said Xu. Future development calls
for the construction of repair workshops, hotels and entertainment facilities
for tourists. "Jinhui Port is in a very good location as it connects Zhejiang
Province and the Huangpu River," said Xu. "In 2010, people can reach the World
Expo site by boat and can also travel to the Zhoushan Islands by pleasure boat.
People in Zhejiang Province can also visit the World Expo in this way after the
water route is opened."
