Cast a line and prepare to reel in a whopper of a fish tale. A fresh water
fish as big as a man is being processed into a specimen at Shanghai Fisheries
University for future exhibition in Zhejiang Province. The fish weighs 75.5
kilograms and is 1.58 meters long. It is the biggest wuqingyu fish - a member of
the cyprinid family that includes carp - to be caught in the country, according
to Weng Zhiyi, a specimen producer at Shanghai Fisheries University. "It is
almost impossible for such fish, or any other fresh water fish, to grow so big
due to water pollution and frequent fishing," Weng said. He said the fish was
about 46 years old. The fish was caught with a net in Qiandaohu Lake in
Zhejiang Province late last month. The fisherman then sold it to a businessman
in Liaoning Province for 2,000 yuan (US$246). Another businessman in
Zhejiang, after learning the story, bought the fish at an unknown price and sent
it to the university for processing. It is a common edible fish that eats
smaller fish, shrimp and water snails. The species usually only reaches about 20
centimeters long.
