Leading firms and industry associations in the software industry in Shanghai
and its neighbors in eastern China will form an alliance today to boost a
competitive software outsourcing sector in a move to consolidate their strengths
in the global market, city officials announced yesterday. Sixteen members of
the Cooperative Alliance of Software Industry in East China & Yangtze River
Delta vow to share resources and cooperate to develop a sustainable software
industry, said officials with the technology trade division of Shanghai Foreign
Economic Relations and Trade Commission during the Global IT Outsourcing Summit
in Shanghai. "The alliance will help secure the Yangtze Delta region to
become a national software outsourcing center," said Zhu Sanyuan, vice director
of the Shanghai Software Industry Association. "As an industry leader,
Shanghai will subcontract some deals with non-core technologies to nearby cities
to facilitate the industry in the region," he added. Shanghai vice Mayor Zhou
Yupeng said at the summit that "the software outsourcing industry will play a
key role in Shanghai's commitment to promote service outsourcing." Shanghai's
software exports jumped a whopping 80 percent from 2003 to US$476 million last
year, the trade commission said. The city has registered an annual growth rate
of over 50 percent in software exports since 2002. Shanghai is now home to
more than 120 software exporters compared with 80 companies in 2002, according
to the commission. The summit lured over 200 experts and business leaders in
the global software industry.
