A temple is to be constructed to enshrine the relics of Master Sengjia in
Jiangyin where they were found. The Jiangsu Province city held a grand
Buddhist ceremony yesterday to lay the foundation for the temple. Among the
monks in attendance were Master Yicheng, chairman of the Buddhist Association of
China, Master Jueguang, chairman of Hong Kong Buddhist Association and Master
Mingxue, chairman of Jiangsu Buddhist Association. Sengjia was once
considered a "Living Buddha" when he was alive and the reincarnation of guanyin,
or the Goddess of Mercy, by disciples. During the Tang (AD 618-907) and Song
(AD 960-1279) dynasties, more than 200 temples were built in the country in
tribute to him. His relics were found in a porcelain vase last year in
Qingyang Town, along with a porcelain bowl, a crystal ball, a golden thumb and
the relics of an underground palace.
