Train trip to Nanjing reduced by 30 minutes

Shanghai Daily news

Train trips between Shanghai and Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, will be made significantly shorter this year due to a series of technical upgrades to rail lines linking the two cities.
Once the improvements are completed, trains running along the line will be able to reach a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour, cutting the duration of the trip by nearly 30 minutes to one hour and 50 minutes.
In October, 2004, the Shanghai Railway Administration made improvements to the 303-kilometer-long line between Shanghai and Nanjing, allowing trains to reach higher speeds and carry more passengers and cargo.
The administration also added two new express services on December 7, which offered a top speed of 154 kilometers per hour and cut 25 minutes off the travel time, shortening it to two hours and 17 minutes.
The upgraded rail link is expected to be put into pilot operation in June, and will start its formal services in the second half of this year, according to a report in the Laodong Daily yesterday, which cited an unnamed source with the Shanghai Railway Administration.
At present, 79 passenger trains and 53 cargo trains are operating on the route every day. It is one of the busiest rail lines in the country.
China has overhauled rail networks across the country five times since 1997, aiming to increase the speed and capacity of trains.
Upgrade work on six key routes, including Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Guangzhou, will also finish before October to improve the country's rail network.
