DreamWorks Animation's cartoon comedy "Kung Fu Panda" delivered an
exciting kick to the competition in North American theaters this weekend, and
debuted in the top spot at the box office, according to preliminary figures
released Sunday.
The film about a panda in ancient China who becomes an unlikely martial-arts
hero is expected to sell US$60 million worth of tickets in the United States and
Canadian theaters over the three-day period, Los Angeles-based box office
tracking firm Media By Numbers said.
"Kung Fu Panda" features the voices of Hollywood A-list stars Jack Black,
Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie as well as Chinese action star Jackie Chan and
American-born Chinese actress Lucy Liu.
Sony Pictures' Adam Sandler comedy "You Don't Mess With The Zohan," in which
the comedian plays an Israeli commando-turned-New York hairdresser, debuted in
the number two spot with estimated 40million dollars over the weekend.
Last week's box office leader "Sex And The City" slipped to No.4 with about
US$21.3 million, a massive 63 percent drop for the big-screen adaptation of the
popular HBO TV series from its surprisingly strong opening. It has grossed
nearly US$100 million since its release two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, "Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" seems to have
strong legs than "Sex And The City." The Harrison Ford action-adventure is on
track to sell US$22.8 million this weekend, for a whopping US$253 million over
three weeks of release.
