The Chinese opera "Mulan" will be staged at the Vienna State Opera House
tomorrow.
It will be the first musical drama from China to be staged at the famed opera
house, "Mulan" composer Guan Xia told a press conference yesterday.
"Mulan" was first staged in Beijing in 2004 and performed in New York in
September the following year, he said.
Franz Loeschnak, the chairman of the Association for the Support of
Austria-China Relations and the organizer of the upcoming performance, said that
the event would have special significance for promoting cultural exchange and
mutual understanding between Austria and China.
"Mulan" would help European audiences understand Chinese opera, he added.
"Mulan" is based on a well-known Chinese legend, which describes how Mulan
pretended to be a man and joined the army instead of her father. The musical
drama is reflective of Chinese culture and spirit.
The title role will be played by Peng Liyuan, a celebrated Chinese folk music
singer while internationally renowned tenor Dai Yuqiang will play the hero.
The Vienna Symphony Orchestra will provide the musical accompaniment for the
opera, and the vocal support will be provided by the Vienna Imperial
Philharmonic Choir.
