Disney's canine comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" finished this weekend
ahead of a horror thriller set in Los Angeles and a terrorism thriller set in
the Middle East to be the top choice of North American movie-goers for a second
week.
"Chihuahua", which is about a spoiled Beverly Hills dog's incredible journey
back home after she is accidentally lost in Mexico, took in US$17.5 million in
the United States and Canada this weekend, good enough for another top place and
a two-week total of US$52.4 million in sales, according to box office tracking
firm Media By Numbers Sunday.
Sony/Screen Gems' new release "Quarantine" was in second place with US$14.2
million over the three-day period. The low-budget horror film tells a story
about a Los Angeles apartment house with its residents being turned into zombies
by a contagion.
Warner Bros.' "Body of Lies" debuted close behind with US$13.1 million. The
movie, directed by British director Ridley Scott and starred by Russell Crowe
and Leonardo DiCaprio, is about a CIA agent trying to uncover a major terrorist
operation in Jordan but doesn't know who he can trust.
Rounding out the top five are Dreamworks' thriller "Eagle Eye" and Sony's
comedy drama "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," with 11 million and US$6.5
million respectively over the weekend.
