Polish Cultural Ministry confers award to Chinese artist

Polish Ministry of Culture in Beijing Wednesday conferred an honorary
award to Chinese renowned sculptor Yuan Xikun to mark his contribution to
spreading Polish culture. At the request of the Polish government, Yuan
created a bust sculpture for the renowned Polish patriot and artist Ienacy Jan
Paderewski this May. The 77-centimeter-high statue stands in the international
friendship forest located in the western part of Beijing's Chaoyang
Park. Visiting Polish congressman Zolzistaw Katamaga presented the award to
Yuan on behalf of the Polish Cultural Ministry. Katamaga expressed his
appreciation for Yuan's efforts to spread Polish culture and promote cultural
exchanges between the two countries. He said the Polish government will make
great efforts to let more Polish know Chinese culture. Some 100 home and
overseas guests attended the conferment ceremony, including Polish Charge
d'affaires to China Agnieszka Lobacz,foreign diplomats and officials from the
Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture. Born in 1860,
Paderewski was former Polish Prime Minister and concert pianist. After WW I, he
signed the Versailles Treaty on behalf of the Polish government and became the
first Polish Prime Minister. When Poland was occupied by Germany in 1939, he
organized a personal concert at the age of 80 to raise money for his country.
