15/1/2007 16:11

Japan will hold a film festival in two major cities of Myanmar, Yangon and Mandalay, in the next two months to boost cultural exchange between the two countries, according to a release of the Japanese Embassy in Yangon today.
The Japanese Film Festival-2007 in Yangon will last from Feb. 21 to 24, while that in Mandalay from March 8 to 11, the release said.
Three Japanese movies -- "Thway", "the Stars Converges" and " Not Yet" will be presented to Myanmar audiences, it said, adding that of the three films, the "Thway" featuring Japan-Myanmar friendship is based on a well known Myanmar novel by Journal Gyaw Ma Ma Lay.
The film was produced by the cooperation of Japan and Myanmar under the directorship of a dedicated Japanese film director Koji Chino in cooperation with the Myanmar Ministry of Information, Myanmar directors, actors and actresses.
The movie, which cost about US$2.6 million, portrays a Japanese girl's search in post-war time for a half brother, who was born by her father, an army officer, and a Myanmar woman in love during the period of the Second World War when Myanmar was occupied by the Japanese troops.
The movie was played by Myanmar actors Kyaw Thu, Min Maw Gon and actress Myo Thandar Tun, Japanese actress Akari Asou and actor Toshiyuki Nagashima.
The premiere show of the film was held last May.
The Japanese film festival has been held in Myanmar annually by the Japanese embassy in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and in last year five films featuring comedy, cartoon, romance, samurai and detective were presented to Myanmar audiences in the two same cities.
Japanese films started to become popular in Myanmar in the 1980s after some movies such as "Take Me Away," "Princes and Photographer" and "On the Road" were screened in the country.
Beginning in 2000, Japanese film festival was introduced in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, a first-ever South Korean film festival was also launched here in last November.
