"I Am Legend" landed atop the foreign box office for a third straight
weekend after sales of US$34 million in 36 markets, according to studio
estimates released Sunday.
Starring Will Smith, the sci-fi thriller opened at No. 1 in Australia, New
Zealand and Greece, and logged a second weekend at the top in Britain where its
total rose to US$37.4 million. So far, "Legend" has grossed US$170.2 million
internationally.
A semiflop in the United States, "The Golden Compass" was No. 2 with US$29
million from 59 territories, good for a total of 232 million -- nearly four
times its domestic haul of about US$62 million.
North American champ "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" was third with
US$19.1 million from 31 territories as its foreign total hit US$100.6 million.
"Alvin and the Chipmunks" followed with US$15.6 million from 49 territories
for an overseas total of US$65.2 million. It opened at No. 2 in Australia.
"Enchanted" was No. 5 with US$15 million from 43 countries, taking its total to
US$138 million.
