Dubbed as "Plato in the Land of Confucius", an exhibition in the Macao
Museum of Art showcasing 130 works of art from the Louvre was inaugurated
yesterday.
The event is part of the tour exhibition launched by the
Louvre, which has been seen in the Capital Museum in Beijing, and the National
Museum of Singapore starting from last year. The Macao Museum of Art will be the
last stop of this regional tour.
Located in the heart of France, the
Louvre has long been famous for its collection of ancient Greek masterpieces,
and serves as a "pilgrimage destination" for literally millions of art
enthusiasts from around the world.
The Louvre received over 8.3 million
visitors annually, among which number of Asian visitors, especially the Chinese,
has seen a significant increase, as a result, the museum decided to break the
traditional boundary and barrier, bringing part of its best collections to
Macao, said a representative of the Louvre.
In order to represent the
great achievements in philosophy, culture and art by the ancient Greeks, the
Macao-leg exhibition was categorized into four sections, namely Life in Ancient
Greece, Spirit of Competition of the Ancient Greeks, Religious Worship in
Ancient Greece and Souls of Ancient Greece. The exhibits include ancient Greek
sculptures, pottery, masks and gravestone.
"It is believed that it will
be some time before these works of art will be displayed again outside the
confines of the Louvre," said Ung Vai Meng, director of Macao Museum of
Art.
