"One-Day-in-China" exhibition, organized by a team of Chinese students
from the University of Manchester, took place in Manchester , Britain yesterday
to celebrate Chinese culture. The one-day exhibition at Whitworth Hall of the
university aimed to introduce and explore two faces of China to visitors -- The
first is the historical face, looking at the old oriental culture, which dates
back over 5,000 years and the second is the modern face of China, and looks at
the incredible developments of the last 30 years, one organizer said. The
exhibition was divided into five different areas, each themed by color and
representing the Olympic rings to tie in with the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games. The red area displayed traditional Chinese custom including Chinese
Zodiac and a demonstration of kirigami - similar to origami, but involving
cutting of the paper as well as folding. The yellow area was an interactive
section including a traditional Chinese musical instrument show that features a
Guzheng, which is a Chinese zither. The natural and historic heritage of China
was presented by photographs and videos in the green area and in the blue area,
the economic development of China through pictures and videos of modern Chinese
cities was shown. The black area introduced Chinese art and music to
visitors. "One-Day-in-China" organized in association with International
Development Office of the University of Manchester and Chinese Students and
Scholars Association of Manchester, was part of the on-going CHINA NOW, the
largest ever festival of Chinese culture in Britain. Activities of CHINA NOW,
aiming to foster greater understanding between China and Britain, began in
February 2008 to coincide with the start of the Chinese New Year and will last
till the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. CHINA NOW includes over
800 events across Britain, encompassing art, design, cuisine and culture,
science, business and technology, education and sports, to celebrate China as a
nation filled with vibrant and dynamic ideas. Visitors to the exhibition
