It is a bit of a mystery how plain-looking Chinese mainland actor Liu Peiqi has so many loyal fans across the nation.

But aided by his unique masculine charm, the 50-year-old is now appearing in his latest role as a courageous captain in the 38-episode TV series "I Am the Sun."

Liu, well-known for his vivid portrayals of generals, gangsters and policemen, said it was a rare chance for him to have a love affair on screen because he is usually not thought handsome enough.

"I Am the Sun" is probably the last time Liu will portray a soldier. In the future, the veteran actor is keen to star in comedies to showcase his rarely seen screen charm.
