27 sites added to World Heritage List

The World Heritage Committee finished updating UNESCO's World Heritage
List yesterday with the addition of 27 cultural and natural sites. The 32nd
session of the committee opened on July 3, and will close on July 10. A total of
43 cultural and natural sites from 41 countries were presented for evaluation on
Sunday. And yesterday it was announced that 27 have been approved. These are 19
cultural sites and 8 natural sites. Tulou, the unique residential
architecture in Fujian Province, and Mount Sanqingshan National Park in Jiangxi
Province in China were added to the World Heritage List. During the morning
session yesterday, the Baha' Holy Places in Haifa and Western Galilee, Israel,
and Chief Roi Mata's Domain in Vanuatu were the final two sites to be added. The
World Heritage List now includes 878 sites. The World Heritage Committee
meets once a year, discussing whether a property is inscribed on the World
Heritage List, and examining the protection of sites on the list.
