A Shanghai court has ordered a foreign man to pay 20,000 yuan (US$2,922) in compensation to the family of a Chinese woman for failing to stop her suicide.

Xuhui District People's Court said the man did not make an effective effort to comfort the distraught woman, who wanted to start a romantic relationship, and that he left the scene after she jumped to her death from a fifth-floor apartment in April.
