An elderly couple from the United States were refused entry into Shanghai over a passport glitch when they landed at Pudong International Airport on Monday.

Officials said the man had deliberately cut off a portion of his passport to help keep it separate from his wife's. The couple said they often traveled abroad separately and the husband had a habit of picking up his wife's passport by mistake. Since the passport was invalid under Chinese immigration rules, officials did not allow the American to enter the country. The woman too flew back with her husband.
