Luo, 21, said he had been constantly depressed by poverty. On the night of June 23, he stood on the top of a 25-storey residential building planning to jump and kill himself when he saw some open apartment windows. Instead of jumping, he climbed into a room on the 24th floor and stole 15,000 yuan (US$2,196) in cash and two laptops. However, the owner awoke and chased him and Luo was caught by police.
