A teenager's love for his pregnant girlfriend drove him to steal a car and try to extort 53,500 yuan (US$7,870) from its owner, Putuo District People's Court heard yesterday.

Yan Zequn, aged 17 at the time, wanted the money to support his girlfriend and the new baby, the court was told.
