A high-ranking district official who reportedly went AWOL while on a government business trip has returned to Shanghai, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Xin Weiming, deputy director of Luwan District, disappeared while in Paris. His colleagues became suspicious when he failed to show up for a breakfast and asked hotel staff to open his room. They found a note left by Xin, saying he was out meeting friends. He failed to contact the group before they returned to China. Sources close to Xin said he has never been linked to any crime, according to the Xinhua report.
