A local resident who caused a cousin to lose an eye during a heated family conflict was given three years' probation for assault yesterday and ordered to pay the victim 120,000 yuan (US$17,496) in compensation.

The defendant, Pan Jinwen, 49, told the Yangpu District People's Court that he would devote all of his personal property to treating his cousin.
