Baoshan District People's Court sentenced Ye Bin and Zhang Hui, both from Chongming County, to six years in prison yesterday for illegally detaining a man who owned them money and contributing to his death.

The victim, Du Lindong. borrowed 40,000 yuan (US$5,859) from the pair and failed to pay them back, the court said. On June 10, the duo took Du to a mahjong room and tried to force him to repay the debt by slapping his face. The defendants then escorted Du to Chongming Island to get their money the next day. But Du jumped into the river and drowned during the trip. The pair then surrendered to police.
