Local residents have lost more than 13 million yuan (US$1.9 million) since September to telephone scam artists pretending to be police, tax and bank officials, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said yesterday, Shanghai Daily reported.

Individual economic losses ranged from several thousand to hundreds of thousands of yuan. Police said they are experiencing a large increase in these scams but did not provide figures yesterday.
