The Shanghai Children's Medical Center yesterday reported that a child who had received an umbilical cord blood transplant to treat a congenital immunity defect is recovering well, the first such case in the city.

The boy was diagnosed with the disease when he was 8 months old and had received an unsuccessful stem cell transplant from his mother.
