Academic failure ranked first among the top 10 bad experiences faced by Shanghai students - surpassing even the pain of losing a relative.

Some 3,660 students from five districts participated in research gauging their resilience to life's tragedies. The study, conducted by the Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences, sought to assess students' capacity to cope with stress and catastrophe.
