The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court yesterday sentenced Le Zhenjiang to life imprisonment and Huang Maoying to 20 years for kidnapping and rape.

Le and Huang went out on December 4, 2006, planning to rob cab drivers. They called an unlicensed taxi driven by a woman. When the car came to a remote place, they asked her to stop and stole 400 yuan (US$58) in cash and a mobile phone. They then took the woman to a rented house and asked for a ransom of 100,000 yuan from her family. Before they were caught by the police on December 9, 2006, they had beaten and raped her.
