Eight-three cases of swindles involving fake housing leases have been reported in Shanghai since August, city police said yesterday. This is a rise of 51 percent from the same period last year.

Police said victims had arranged to rent homes, signed contracts, paid up to four months rent in advance, only to find that the apartment had already been rented out or didn't belong to the people they had signed leases with.
