More than 500 gamblers and gambling parlor operators have been detained by city police in surprise investigations over the past week, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said yesterday.

Gambling was found at 243 gaming parlors, among the 2,254 that were visited. City police closed 135 parlors without business licenses, and shut down 54 temporarily, according to the police.
