An elderly couple escaped a blaze at their fourth-story apartment about 10am yesterday. Neighbors called firefighters after they smelled smoke and heard cries for help coming from the victims' room in a residential complex on Yongkang Road.

The couple fled after failing to put out the fire. Fire authorities said a short circuit in an old television caused the blaze.
