Construction started yesterday on the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, which will hold the 14th World Swimming Championships in 2011, Shanghai Daily reported.

The 2-billion-yuan (US$293 million) center along the southern stretch of the Huangpu River is expected to be finished by the end of 2010 and open in July 2011.
