A woman was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday for defrauding more than 14 million yuan (US$2.05 million) by promising high returns in the name of charity institutions.

The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court ruled that Xu Lihua, a 47-year-old local businesswoman, committed crimes of fraud and contract fraud and confiscated all her personal property.
