On August 7, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng focused on ensuring adequate vegetable
supplies when he visited local farming areas after the major typhoon
hit.
Typhoon Matsa slammed the city last weekend, killing six people and
injuring another 30. Up to 70 percent of the 500,000-mu (33,333-hectare)
vegetable growing areas citywide were affected.
Han visited a horticultural
park in suburban Minhang District, where over 80 percent of the park's area was
destroyed. More than 100 vegetable sheds were blown down and a dozen mu of
cowpea plant was ruined.
On seeing farmers clearing up the destroyed
vegetables, Han thanked them for their hard work and also that of the park's
director Xia Guohai.
He encouraged them to swiftly restore vegetable growing
in a bid to ensure local vegetable supplies.
He also required government
departments to take appropriate action to source vegetables from outside the
city to supplement local supplies.
"Municipal and district governments should
provide as much assistance as they can to the affected farmers," he said.
In
response, Minhang District leaders decided on the spot to make resources
available.
